The world famous lights of Las Vegas were switched off for the first time on Saturday, when millions joined in to celebrate Earth Hour.
The brain child of World Wildlife Fund, Earth Hour is a worldwide event to raise awareness of climate change. It is an annual event that takes place on the last Saturday in March, where Homes, Businesses and Buildings around the world switch off non essential lights for 60 minutes.
The Bills Gamblin’ Hall and Saloon Marquee was the first to switch off its light on Las Vegas Boulevard, and then one by one the Neon lights of the City went dark leaving on-looks to stand in amazement.
According to witnesses the only lights left on were those of vehicle headlights, hotel rooms and CityCenter’s construction site.
Sources said that before 8.30pm a video explanation for Earth Hour was played on the Via Vision Canopy, the world’s biggest big screen, before it too went black for an hour.
Las Vegas resident Corrine Hall said, “Earth Hour is about what you do at home, it’s about those small changes you can make. It is making sure your lights are turned off, making sure the power strip to your computer goes down, It’s just small things, it’s taking five minutes to change something small.”
